Rail Industry Training Courses

This section includes training courses that are specifically aimed at the rail industry and those working on Network Rail sites.

In order to attend many of these courses candidates, along with additional pre-requisites, must:

  • Be over the age of eighteen
  • Meet the requirements of Network Rail’s medical, drug and alcohol requirements
  • Have a sponsor or recommendation from management to attend the course


AOD Level Crossing Attendant (LXA)

The Level Crossing Attendant (LXA) – Initial course is a one-day classroom based course which teaches candidates how to operate level crossing barriers. The certificate is valid for two years and can be renewed by candidates completing the one-day AOD Level Crossing Attendant (LXA) – Requalification course.

Controller of Site Safety (COSS)

The Controller of Site Safety course (COSS) – Initial course is a seven-day course which teaches candidates how to organise safe systems of work on Network Rail sites. In order to attend this course, candidates must hold a current Sentinel Track Safety certificate endorsed with PTS. The certificate is valid for two years and can be renewed by candidates completing the five-day Controller of Site Safety (COSS) – Requalification course.

DC Conductor Rails (DCCR)

The DC Conductor Rails is a basic one-day course which teaches candidates how to work safety close to DC conductor rails. In order to attend this course, candidates must have completed the Personal Track Safety (PTS) course previously. The certificate is valid for two years and candidates must complete the course again to remain qualified. 

Engineering Supervisor

The Engineering Supervisor (ES) – Initial two-day course is suitable for those who already hold a Sentinel Track Safety Certificate and wish to work on a Network Rail site. Candidates are required to undertake mentoring and assessments after the course and need to complete a one-day Engineering Supervisor (ES) – Requalification course every two years to remain qualified.

Full Track Induction

The Full Track Induction course is a ten-day course accredited by Network Rail. Prior to attending this course, candidates must complete the PTS E-learning course and pass any relevant medical tests. Candidates will be assessed through both written and practical assessments and upon successful completion will be qualified in; Personal Track Safety, Direct Current Conductor Rails, Emergency First Aid at Work, Manual Handling and Fire Awareness.

Personal Track Safety

The Personal Track Safety course is a basic course required to work on Network Rail infrastructure. Prior to attending the one-day Personal Track Safety (AC) – Initial course, candidates must have completed the Personal Track Safety E-learning course. Candidates will be required to complete a one-day Personal Track Safety (AC) – Requalification course after two years to remain qualified.
