EUSR Training - National Water Hygiene Course
The EUSR (Energy & Utility Skills Register) National Water Hygiene training scheme has been developed for those who work on clean water sites or the clean water network – this includes not only water mains and service pipes, but also areas known as “restricted operations” such as reservoirs, treatment works, wells and pumping stations. All individuals working in these areas are required by UK water companies to hold what is often called the “Blue Card” – the EUSR National Water Hygiene Card. The only way to obtain this is to successfully pass the EUSR National Water Hygiene course.
The EUSR National Water Hygiene scheme has been developed alongside consultation with all water companies in the UK to ensure protection of public health and ensuring good water hygiene practices. The “Blue Card”, which was introduced in 2006, has replaced all other water company specific hygiene schemes.
Course Detail
This course covers 4 separate modules, all aimed at highlighting the importance of water hygiene and preventing contamination.
Some of the aspects covered under the different modules are summarised below:
Module 1: The importance of water
- Public expectations for clean water as a food product
- Personal hygiene working with water
- Correct PPE
Module 2: Water as a carrier of disease
- Different medical conditions that can be caused as a result of dirty water
- Preventing health conditions from contaminated water
Module 3: Potential contamination and its consequences
- Different types of contamination
- Pets & Livestock Risks
- Awareness of how potable water can be contaminated
Module 4: Preventing contamination.
- Chlorination and disinfection
- Cleaning procedures
- Responsibilities around contamination
A health screening questionnaire is an essential element of the scheme and must be completed by all individuals prior to the training and assessment.
Individuals who sit and pass the EUSR National Water Hygiene course will achieve the EUSR Registration, valid for 3 years.
Course Delivery
EUSR National Water Hygiene courses take place both in online classroom and conventional classroom environments. They typically last between half a day and a full day, depending on the course format and trainer in question.
