First Aid Training
The Emergency First Aid – Appointed Persons course is recommended by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) as the minimum required standard for the workplace. Whereas, a trained First Aider is someone who has attended a course for administering first aid at work and holds a valid first aid certificate. A trained First Aider can also fulfil the functions of an Appointed Person if required.

Many companies are unsure whether a first aider is required for their organisation. The need for first aiders depends largely on your assessment of risk and the range of activities and operations carried out at the organisation. The HSE provides guidelines for completing your risk assessment. It should be noted that there are additional training requirements associated with specific regulations associated with some industries, for example, offshore installations and pipeline works. If your organisation needs a trained First Aider(s) in the workplace then they should attend an HSE Approved First Aid at Work course. At the time of writing this, HSE approved First Aider certification is valid for a period of 3 years and the courses are run over a period of 4 days. A 2 day Refresher course must also be undertaken at the end of the 3 year period.
