The first decision when booking NRSWA training
is whether to take an operative or supervisor course? The way to discern this is based on your role. Are you actually doing the jobs such as excavation, signing and lighting or reinstatement? If so then you are classed as an operative.
If, however you are overseeing a team that is doing these tasks and not actually doing them yourself, you are classed as a supervisor. Some delegates swap between roles. If this is the case for you, you will need both an operator and a supervisor course at separate times. Also please bear in mind that it is not recommended that you try to do both roles at simultaneously!
Once you have established whether you are an operative or a supervisor, the next task is to select the correct NRSWA training
units to do.
Units into Qualifications
units accumulate in groupings to make qualifications. Doing a certain sets of units results in the corresponding qualifications. So starting with the qualifications that you need from NRSWA training
and then working backwards to establish which units to do is a good way of doing this.
There are nine operatives units available. The most popular combination of operative units, offered by a large proportion of trainers is 1-6 + 9. This then results in the following four qualifications: 01, 02, 05 and 06, details as below.
Operatives’ qualifications and the corresponding units are as follows:
Qualification O1 - Excavation in the road/highway is made up of units - 001, 002 and 003. Qualification 02 - Excavation, backfilling and reinstatement – cold lay units is made up of units 001, 002, 003, 004, 005 and 006. Qualification O3 - Reinstatement – hot and cold lay bituminous materials is made up of units 001, 002, 006 and 007. Qualification O4 - Reinstatement of concrete slabs is made up of units 001, 002 and 008. Qualification O5 - Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways is made up of units 001, 002 and 009 and qualification 06 - Signing, lighting and guarding is made up of the single unit 002.
There are seven NRSWA training
supervisors units available, plus the 001 Singing, lighting and guarding unit from the operatives section. The most popular combination of supervisor units is 1, 10-14 + 16. This combination results in the S1, S2, S3, S5 and S10 qualifications, details as below.
Supervisors qualifications and the corresponding units are as follows:
These eight units in combination result in six supervisor qualifications:
The qualification S1 - Monitor excavation in the road/highway is made up of units 001, 010 and 011. Qualification S2 - Monitor excavation, backfilling and reinstatement - construction layers is made up of the units 001, 010, 011, 012, 013 and 014. To achieve the S3 - Monitor reinstatement – hot and cold lay bituminous materials qualification, you will need to do units 001, 010 and 014. The S4 - Monitor reinstatement of concrete slabs qualification is made up of units 001, 010 and 015. Getting the S5 - Monitor reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways qualification means successfully achieving 001, 010 and 016 and the S6 Monitor signing, lighting and guarding qualification is made up of the single 010 unit.
