The CITB course options.
The first CITB Health and Safety
course to cover is The Site Managers Safety Training Scheme or SMSTS. It is a five day course that covers issues such as legislation, accidents, risk assessment, health and safety management, dealing with contractors, safe work systems, communication, encouraging health and safety and duties of all parties and planning.
One of the key benefits of the SMSTS course is that it can be taken either as a full working week block or as a day a week course, lasting a total of five weeks. This means no matter what your work commitments are you should find it easier to get a course that suits you.
The second key CITB Health and Safety
course is the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme or SSSTS. This is a two day course covering the essentials for site managers. It addresses issues such as legislation, health and safety management systems, fire prevention, risk assessments, COSHH, CDM, working at heights, PPE and manual handling.
One of the essential benefit of these two CITB Health and Safety
courses is that they both come in full and refresher formats. This is brilliant for candidates that have already successfully achieved their full qualification, as they can, for a fraction of the time and cost, complete a shorter course and keep their certificate in date. The only thing to be aware of here, is that both SMSTS and SSSTS cards have a validity period of five years and a six month grace period. This means you can only attend a refresher within this time. After that candidates need to do the full course again.
Another CITB Health and Safety
course is the Plant Managers Safety Training Scheme or PMSTS. Akin to the SMSTS, the PMSTS is five days long and is aimed at managers rather than supervisors. The course covers aspects of health and safety relevant both to the managers role and to the areas of heavy plant machinery such as: legislation, plant regulations, site set up, risk assessment, working at height, working with electricity, excavations, demolition and confined spaces.
Other CITB Health and Safety
courses on offer include SEATS, ABC and SSS. The Site Environmental Awareness Training or SEATS is a single day course, which provides an introduction to environmental issues in construction. The SEATS course covers the importance of the environment, environmental management systems, site waste management, water management and pollution, energy and resources, being a responsible contractor and neighbour relations.
The Achieving Behavioral Change or ABC course, is another single day option, designed to introduce candidates to health and safety in construction. It’s main aim is to increase safety, by encouraging workers to change their attitude and behaviour.
The Site Sustainability Simplified course is a two day option, primarily focusing on how to reduce waste and make the construction industry more sustainable. This course covers BREEAM, water, energy, transport, materials, heritage, the effect on the community and safe waste management.
