To help delegates make an informed choice on which training is right for them, the following article addresses some of the most frequently asked questions on CPCS training
. Can I do my CPCS training straight away?
Firstly you must have passed the CSCS health and safety touch screen test in the last 2 years before you can be enrolled onto a CPCS training
course. You can contact the CSCS to book a test on 0344 9944488.
In addition, the CPCS needs to be notified of your test before you complete it. Therefore, it is advisable to book the test a minimum of a week in advance to allow for this. How much will it cost? CPCS training
can be costly, especially for the individual. Although prices differ slightly across different training providers, locations and categories the testing alone, without any training preparation can cost over £500.00 + VAT. Companies registered for the CITB levy may be eligible to claim some of this cost back. What testing is involved?
The CPCS training
elements are split into 2 parts.
The theory test must be passed first. It consists of a verbal exam, in which assessor examines the operative’s theoretical knowledge of the plant category they are working with.
Once the theory test has been passed the practical tests can be taken. The delegate is asked to operate the piece of plant machinery and their performance is assessed. There is a time limit for this part of the test. Am I a novice or an experienced worker?
When enquiring about CPCS training
you will asked to describe your level of experience with the category you are interested in. Operatives with 2 or more years experience are usually counted as experienced workers, and are advised to take a days training before embarking on the CPCS theory and practical tests. If you have less than 2 years experience you will typically be counted as a novice worker and are advised to complete more extensive training before taking the CPCS tests.
Training providers offer packages of training and testing to suit all experience levels and costs for this start at around £1000 + VAT depending on location, experience and category. What happens if I fail one part?
You can re-sit both the theory and practical tests. However if you have booked both tests for the same day and fail the theory test, you will not be allowed to proceed to the practical test and refunds are not issued. Remember if you are concerned that you may not pass, additional training or booking the theory test alone may be a better option. When contacting a CPCS training provider, it is essential to have the following information to hand: your full name and date of birth, your national insurance number, your CSCS number and the date on which you passed you CSCS Touch screen health and safety test.
