An ILM Level 3 Award in Leadership and Management course for people with management responsibilities, that want to develop their abilities without spending too much time away from their jobs.


This high impact ILM course consists of just 2.5 workshop days plus a half-day tutorial focussed on the successful completion of two work-based assignments and being coached to reflect on their own practice

 

Course Content


The two units covered have been chosen for their focus on core management skills that can have an instant impact on a Manager’s ability and thus their performance on the job. The units covered are:


• Leading and Motivating a Team Effectively
• Understanding Performance Management

 

The course will cover:


Leading and Motivating a Team Effectively
• Vision, mission and strategy and what they mean for first line leadership
• Developing team objectives that support overall strategy and vision
• Creating a common sense of purpose that links to vision and strategy
• Using effective communication to convey the overall mission of the organisation and how the collective work of the team and its individual members support success
• Effective techniques for communicating vision, goals and objectives
• The critical importance of teams and individuals being motivated and committed to their objectives
• Theories of motivation and motivation factors, with a deep dive on how these can be used to manage people more effectively in a variety of situations
• Principles and practice of giving feedback on performance to optimise development and results
• Basic support needs that individuals may have and how to meet these
• The importance of continuous development for the team and individual member

 

Understanding Performance Management
• First line manager’s responsibility for managing performance and meeting objectives
• Identifying the causes of poor performance in the context of own organisation (lack of skills, lack of knowledge, poor motivation, lack of incentives, lack of information etc)
• Formal and informal performance assessment at work
• Ways to ensure fair and objective assessment (including objectives and ongoing monitoring)
• Planning for effective, valid and reliable assessments
• Roles and responsibilities of individuals in the performance assessment process
• What makes an appropriate performance assessment record
• How to conduct formal performance assessment (i.e. appraisals, one-to-ones)
• The relevance of SMART objectives, and how to set them properly
• How to set performance standards for individuals and teams (KPI’s, Benchmarking, Objectives etc.)
• Tools and techniques for measuring performance against agreed standards
• A range of methods for measuring performance and how to select the ideal one
• Techniques for performance monitoring and evaluation
• Range of performance improvement methods

 

Course Detail


Pre-Course Preparation:


There is no pre-course preparation required for this award; though TSW would encourage the learner to consider the topic areas outlined and how they relate to your organisation and experiences. Delegates are requested to complete a pre-course questionnaire that will be handed to the tutor before the first day of the course. This ensures that the course is delivered to the highest quality and is relevant to delegate’s needs and objectives.


Assessment:
This ILM Level 3 Award in Leadership and Management is Assessed via two written work-based assignments that are to be completed in the learner’s own time.

The two assignments to complete are on the units:
• Leading and Motivating a Team Effectively
• Understanding Performance Managemen
