The course is aimed at those individuals within organisations who are responsible for the auditing of an EMS. It is designed to equip individuals with a working understanding of the EMS audit process and how it should be applied to their own organisation’s EMS.
You are not expected to possess a detailed level of knowledge of EMS and auditing prior to the course. Though it will help if you have a basic knowledge of environmental issues relevant to your company.

- Introduction to Environmental Management Systems
- The purpose, structure, and elements of ISO 14001
- Implementation of ISO 14001 and use of ISO 14004
- Introduction to 19011 auditing standards
- Establishing & managing an audit programme
- Pre-audit activities: Objectives, scope, planning and preparation of work documents
- Conducting audits – communications, managing audit teams, document review, physical observation, questioning skills & good interview technique
- Analysis of evidence, findings, conclusions, and preparation of audit report
- Completion of audits and audit follow-up
- Competencies, responsibilities & CPD of auditors
- Key do’s and don’ts
Case studies, discussions and interactive, problem-based individual and group training exercises are used throughout the course to reinforce delegates’ learning.
This training develops the skills needed to assess and report on the conformance and effective implementation of processes, and to contribute to the continual improvement of an environmental management system based on the ISO 14001:2015 standard.
On completion of this EMS auditor training course you will be able to:
- Understand the basics and background of EMS auditing.
- Understand and be able to describe the relationship and differences between a range of audit types.
- Understand the principles of auditing (BS EN ISO 19011)
- Understand the internal audit process.
- Identify key compliance obligations with environment-related content.
- Identify and explain Environmental Aspects/ Impacts and their significance; and evaluate their broader role in the determination of organisational/business risks and opportunities.
- Be able to identify other sources of information and advice.
The training comprises presentations, workshops, and role-play exercises.
Please note: Participants are not expected to possess knowledge of auditing, quality management systems or ISO 14001:2015 before attending the course.
Assessment
This qualification is made up of three main assessments. These include:
- A quiz testing knowledge attained
- A practical internal audit, with live evidence, including audit report write up
- Tutor observation of your involvement in the course
Each of the assessments is completed during the three-day course.
