Course aims:
This course is designed to train candidates on the safe entry, work, and exit of low and medium-risk confined spaces. It includes training on the use of access equipment (such as tripod and winch systems and rescue retrievers), confined space rescue harnesses, atmospheric monitoring tools, ventilation techniques, and the use of 15-minute emergency escape breathing apparatus. It also covers confined space communications and the responsibilities of the Top Person.
The course provides foundational knowledge on confined space legislation, how to identify confined spaces and associated hazards, risk assessments, safe systems of work, and the critical need for a confined space rescue plan.
Practical exercises take place in our purpose-built confined space training simulator, where delegates will descend/ascend and traverse a designated confined space while wearing an approved safety harness and breathing apparatus with a face mask/hood. Delegates will navigate over 36 meters of various tunnels under simulated emergency conditions, including noise, limited light, and fluctuating safe atmospheric conditions such as smoke.
Course Contents:
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Safely prepare for and enter low and medium-risk confined spaces
- Safely exit low and medium-risk confined spaces
- Use appropriate escape breathing apparatus according to manufacturers’ specifications
- Safely use tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions
- Follow procedures and work safely in confined spaces
- Effectively handle emergencies in confined space environments
- Demonstrate appropriate behaviour and knowledge for confined space work
- Apply relevant industry standards for confined space operations
- Act as the Top Person (Safety Attendant) for teams working in confined spaces
- Monitor and oversee safe entry, exit, and procedures within confined spaces
Assessment/ Certification:
Delegates will complete practical exercises where they will descend/ascend and navigate a confined space simulator wearing a safety harness and breathing apparatus with face mask/hood, completing tasks under simulated emergency conditions including noise, limited light, and variable safe atmospheric conditions. Assessment is carried out through practical observation and a written test.
Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will receive a TQUK Certificate for Confined Space Entry (Low & Medium Risk), valid for three years.
Duration:
1 Day
Equipment Required:
CLEAN PPE – personal protective equipment/clothing, hard hat (with effective chin strap), coveralls, protective footwear, gloves, protective eyewear, and knee pads.
Please note:
This course includes the use of 15-minute Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus (Escape Set) but does not qualify personnel in the use of full breathing apparatus.
