Course Aims:
This course is designed to equip candidates with the skills and knowledge needed to safely enter, work in, and exit low and medium-risk confined spaces. The training includes the use of access equipment (tripod and winch systems, rescue retrievers), confined space rescue harnesses, atmospheric monitoring tools, ventilation methods, and the operation of 15-minute emergency escape breathing apparatus. It also covers confined space communication protocols and the responsibilities of the Top Person.
The course provides essential knowledge of confined space legislation, identifying confined spaces and their associated risks, understanding confined space risk assessments, and implementing safe systems of work for confined space operations. It also emphasises the legal requirements and the importance of having a confined space rescue plan in place.
Practical exercises are conducted in our purpose-built confined space training simulator. Delegates will descend, ascend, and navigate through a designated confined space while wearing an approved safety harness and breathing apparatus with a face mask/hood. During the simulation, delegates will be required to crawl through over 36 meters of tunnels, experiencing various emergency conditions such as noise, limited lighting, and fluctuating atmospheric conditions, including smoke.
Course Contents:
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Safely prepare to work in medium-risk confined spaces
- Enter and exit a medium-risk confined space safely
- Prepare and use an escape breathing apparatus in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications
- Safely use equipment and tools according to manufacturers’ instructions
- Follow working procedures and adhere to safety protocols
- Handle emergencies effectively
- Understand the principles and best practices for working in medium-risk confined spaces
- Apply standard protocols for working in confined spaces
- Act as the entry controller for teams working in confined spaces
- Monitor the safe entry and exit of confined spaces
- Ensure work teams follow procedures throughout confined space operations
- Prepare for and manage emergency situations
- Demonstrate appropriate behaviour and knowledge in the entry controller role for confined spaces
- Apply relevant industry standards in the entry controller role
Assessment:
Assessment will be carried out through practical observation and a written test.
Certification:
Upon successful completion of both the practical and written assessments, delegates will receive the City & Guilds 6160-09 Level 2 Award in Working in Medium Risk Confined Spaces.
Delegates will be expected to navigate a designated confined space within a training simulator, wearing an approved safety harness, breathing apparatus with face mask/hood, and PPE. The delegate will traverse tunnels under various simulated emergency conditions, including noise, limited light, and fluctuating safe atmospheric conditions.
Duration:
2 Days
Equipment Required:
CLEAN PPE – personal protective equipment/clothing, hard hat (with effective chin strap), coverall, protective footwear, gloves, protective eyewear and knee pads.
Please Note: This Confined Space Entry Course includes the use of 15 minute Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus (Escape Set) but does not qualify personnel in the use of full breathing apparatus (please refer to the High Risk Entry Course for full BA use).
