NEBOSH is a UK examination board which sets syllabuses and assessments for many qualifications in health and safety. The body has an extremely good reputation worldwide and approximately 30,000 candidates every year are attracted to NEBOSH courses. Its courses are offered by 400 course providers and are provided in many other countries outside of the UK.
Its exams and assessments are set by staff who hold professional qualifications and the external examiners who assist in the assessment process are mainly Chartered Safety and Health Practitioners. Coming to work with NEBOSH really is coming to work with the experts and there is no better choice in terms of quality and expertise.
There are two general NEBOSH certificate courses; the National General Certificate and the International General Certificate. Both are made up of three modules and address occupational health and safety issues relevant to a range of fields.
Candidates can expect to cover issues such as Foundations in Health and Safety policy, organisation, planning, management and auditing as well as workplace hazards, musculoskeletal hazards, workplace equipment, electrical safety, fire safety, chemical and biological hazards and physical and psychological hazards.
In addition to the General options, there are specific NEBOSH courses for different industries; one such example is the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety.
This NEBOSH award trains candidates in ensuring that the activities over which they have control are undertaken in a safe manner. It has an enviable reputation, with numerous candidates having successfully passed the course in a little over twenty years.
As with the General courses, an international certificate, for those working outside of the UK, is also available. The main difference is that the international course leaves out all the UK specific information.
Other specific NEBOSH courses include Oil and Gas, Environmental and Fire Safety & Risk.
Many establishments offering NEBOSH courses provide distance learning through e-learning courses which are perfect if you cannot travel to your chosen establishment, or your time is restrained and you can only learn at a certain time. There are day or evening courses which run over a number of weeks, or there are block release or modular courses if these are more suited to your lifestyle. In this way, you can arrange training around your needs.
There are many benefits to distance learning courses; these are often significantly cheaper than a classroom course and minimise commute time and costs as candidates will only need to travel for the exams. Candidates can also choose to work through the materials at their own pace, focusing their time on the elements they feel need the most work. Distance courses also include support from tutors and other candidates through social media groups, email and telephone support.
The classroom environment does offer some distinct advantages, however. Candidates benefit from having the tutor on hand to provide guidance and answer questions as they occur. Classroom courses are mostly run as block courses meaning they can be a quicker option and candidates attending in this manner can benefit from discussing their learning with the others on the course.
Although it is advised that applicants should have an understanding of the basic practical aspects of their industry prior to enrolment, neither any formal qualification nor any previous health and safety knowledge is required.
Keep in mind that it is fundamentally required for your written English skills to be of a reasonable standard, as a short written report is also part of the examination.
If you work (or are intending to work) in health and safety in any way at all, there is almost certainly a NEBOSH course for you
There are several aspects to consider in looking for the best way to book a place on a NEBOSH course. You could always phone around the different potential course providers, but many people find this to be inconvenient and time-consuming.
The alternative is to find a website through which you can book your place on a course. From here, you will be able to browse through the full range of options for your chosen course and will be able to compare the different locations and price levels.
