With the rise of technology and the internet, online learning has become a popular alternative to traditional face-to-face training, but this raises the question as to whether you can learn as effectively online as you can in a classroom. Without a doubt, there are pros and cons to each method but do the benefits of online classrooms make them a better option than face to face training?
The Benefits of Online Learning
Flexibility and Convenience
Many online courses will allow you to learn at your own pace which can suit different styles of learners well and makes it easier to balance study around personal and work commitments. In addition to this, online material can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection which reduces the need for travel and provides the learner with more course options.
Diverse Range of Learning Tools
One of the key benefits to learning online is that course hosts can take advantage of different types of multimedia to enhance the delivery, many online platforms can also provide instant feedback through quizzes or assessments that can help learners to understand their progress and reinforce their knowledge.
Cost Effective
Online courses can be more affordable as they don’t have the associated costs that their in-person alternatives have, both course hosts and attendees need to factor in venue costs, travelling, accommodation and other physical material costs.
Personalised Interaction
Courses that we offer in Online Classroom environments differ to those offered as “e-learning” – Online Classroom courses are tutor led and allow for direct interaction over the web platform of choice (typically Zoom). In this way personalised interaction and feedback is very much a part of these courses. Candidates can still have their questions answered in real time and be able to respond as they would in a face-to-face environment. E-learning courses tend to be self taught and not in real time.
The Advantages to Face-to-Face Training
Direct Interaction
Having direct access to educators can allow immediate clarification of any learning gaps which can suit some learners better. Educators can also provide personalised feedback and additional support to those who need it. Interacting with other attendees can also be good for networking and moral support for tougher subject areas.
That being said, as above, Online Classroom courses do still offer the direct/personalised support due to being tutor led – it is only e-learning courses that are self-taught.
Hands-On Experience
For certain skills, especially those involving machinery or physical tasks, it is evident that in-person training is a better fit and will leave learners feeling more confident as they take these skills into the outside world.
Structured Environment
Having a physical environment for learning can maintain discipline and focus and provides a more traditional and structured way of learning.
Comparing Effectiveness
Studies have shown that learning outcomes for both online and F2F training can be comparable if the courses have been well designed and structured. Online courses that perform well include high quality learning materials and interactive elements. It also requires the right kind of individual who is motivated and self-disciplined enough to absorb, retain and understand the subject matter.
It is worth noting that the topic will have a big impact on the effectiveness of online learning - theory based subjects like IT and business can be taught effectively from a distance. Practical training courses that require hands-on practice, like plant machinery operation, are better suited to a face-to-face environment where learners can demonstrate their competence on real equipment.
In summary both learning and face-to-face training have their advantages and disadvantages. Online learning provides flexibility, accessibility and cost-effectiveness making it a viable option for many students. However, F2F training provides direct interaction, hands-on experience and a structured learning environment that is critical for certain types of training. Ultimately, the effectiveness of online courses depends on the subject matter, the design of the materials and the attitude of the learner. For some areas, especially those requiring practical skills, face to face training remains indispensable.
