What are the key differences between the supervisor and operatives NRSWA courses and how can you book a space?
There are two different levels of
streetworks course available - supervisor and operative. Below you will find a breakdown of the differences between these two courses, which should help to enable you to make the correct decision on your training.
Different units
At the most essential level, a
streetworks course is made up of different elements of learning called units. The units for the operative’s course are:
Unit 1 - Location and avoidance of underground apparatus.
Unit 2 - Signing, lighting and guarding.
Unit 3 - Excavation in the highway.
Unit 4 - Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials.
Unit 5 - Reinstatement of sub-base and road base in non-bituminous materials.
Unit 6 - Reinstatement in cold-lay bituminous materials.
Unit 7 - Reinstatement in hot-lay bituminous materials.
Unit 8 - Reinstatement of concrete slabs.
Unit 9 - Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways.
The units for the supervisor’s course are:
Unit 1 - Location and avoidance of underground apparatus.
Unit 10 - Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding.
Unit 11 - Monitoring excavation in the highway.
Unit 12 - Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials.
Unit 13 - Monitoring reinstatement of sub-base and road base in non-bituminous materials.
Unit 14 - Monitoring reinstatement in bituminous materials.
Unit 15 - Monitoring reinstatement of concrete slabs.
Unit 16 - Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footway.
Different qualifications
Units alone do not result in a NRSWA qualification. Candidate must have the correct combination of units to succeed in gaining one or more of the six following qualifications:
Operatives:
1. Excavation in the road/highway (Units 001, 002 and 003)
2. Excavation, backfilling and reinstatement – cold lay (Units 001, 002, 003, 004, 005 and 006)
3. Reinstatement – hot and cold lay bituminous materials (Units 001, 002, 006 and 007)
4. Reinstatement of concrete slabs (Units 001, 002 and 008)
5. Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways (Units 001, 002 and 009)
6. Signing, lighting and guarding (Unit 002)
Supervisors:
1. Monitor excavation in the road/highway (Units 001, 010 and 0112)
2. Monitor excavation, backfilling and reinstatement - construction layers (Units 001, 010, 011, 012, 013 and 014)
3. Monitor reinstatement – hot and cold lay bituminous materials (Units 001, 010 and 014)
4. Monitor reinstatement of concrete slabs (Units 001, 010 and 015)
5. Monitor reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways (Units 001, 010 and 016)
6. Monitor signing, lighting and guarding (Unit 010)
Different responsibilities
It is interesting to note, that while the subject of the units from the operative to the supervisor course remains consistent, the focus is shifted slightly from completing the job itself to being the person directing it. While delegates can be qualified as both an operative and a supervisor, they cannot do both jobs at simultaneously. In addition they are required to attend two training courses, one to learn to do the job safely (operative) and one to learn how to supervise the job safely (supervisor).
Either the supervisor or operative
streetworks course are available at trainers’ venues all over the United Kingdom. Once you have decided which
