Course Aim


The aim of the course is to give your employees the knowledge and understanding to be able to manage and control the risks associated with legionella bacteria within your business.


It will help your employees understand the effects of legionella bacteria on the body and the impact an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease would have on a working site, how to identify and control the risks associated with legionella bacteria and how legislation and codes of practice can support its control. It is also
designed to enforce the importance of the Responsible Person.


Who Should Attend


This course is ideal for the "responsible person" or “duty holder” and their nominated deputies and will ensure that they have the capability and skills for the confident management of legionella and water hygiene issues.


This includes employers, self-employed people and anyone else in control of a premises, such as landlords and letting agents.

  •  Conditions required for legionella bacteria to multiple within water systems.
  •  Methods of transmission and infection.
  •  Factors that affect susceptibility to Legionnaires’ disease.
  •  Typical symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease.
  •  How cases of Legionnaires’ disease can impact on the operation of a site.
  •  Legislation and codes of practice and how they relate to health and safety legislation.
  •  Consequences of non-compliance with legislation and codes of practice.
  •  Key roles and responsibilities associated with the management of legionella bacteria.
  •  Requirements of the British standards relating to legionella risk assessments.
  •  Importance of a written scheme.
  •  How to write a written scheme and how it should be implemented.
  •  Importance of record keeping.
  •  Importance of training and competence assessment of nominated individuals.
  •  Importance of routine reviews of the written scheme
