For many years organisations big and small have recognised the impact of negative employee health and wellbeing. For most it’s the biggest cause of employee absence. The 2016/17 figures stated by the HSE show that 1.3 million UK workers suffered from a work-related ill health issue, whilst over 70,000 workers suffered a RIDDOR reportable accident. These figures demonstrate the everyday experiences of most employers across a variety of industry sectors. A large number of organisations have developed relatively effective methods of controlling safety risks but are still left wanting when it comes to managing the health and wellbeing of their workforce. The skills developed by safety professionals are not necessarily transferable to the challenges posed by occupational health and wellbeing issues, leaving many organisations vulnerable and at risk.
