Health & Safety Awareness (CITB) - Site Safety Plus
Introduction
This course is an ideal introduction for obtaining a basic understanding of health and safety duties and responsibilities, and becoming aware of hazards and risks on site.
It is designed for those who have entered, or are about to enter, the construction and civil engineering industry as a member of the workforce, to help them understand the potential hazards that they face at work on site.
It provides a practical summary of health and safety, welfare and environmental issues identifying individual responsibilities for looking after themselves and others, what the employer’s duties are and what should be done if they think anyone’s health and safety is being put at risk.
Aims and Objectives
The course aims to ensure that individual responsibilities are understood;
- Why they are carrying out their identified duties, and
- What is expected of them, and
- To ensure that they contribute to the safety of the workplace.
At the end of the course delegates will be able to;
- Understand the need to prevent accidents
- Have an understanding of health and safety law
- Identify how their role fits into the control and management of the site
- Understand the need for risk assessments and method statements
- Appreciate the need to perform safely, stop and ask for advice if not sure
- Feel obliged to report unsafe acts to prevent an accident.

Entry Requirements
The minimum entry equipment is a good understanding of spoken and written English.

Assessment, Certification and Course Handbook
The method of assessment will be by multiple-choice questions at the end of the course, as well as being expected to be interactive during the course. The examination paper is compulsory and consists of 25 multiple-choice questions selected by Cskills Awards. The examination lasts for 30 minutes and must be completed within this time. Delegates are permitted to use the GE707 Safe Start safety handbook publication for the last ten minutes of the examination period. The examination pass mark is 72%.
CITB certification is awarded to the delegate upon achieving this pass mark. The course publication is the Safe Start safety handbook GE707.
Duration and Delegate Numbers
This is a full one day course with a maximum number of 20 delegates per course.
Course Progression
Upon successful completion of this course, a natural progression would be the Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) course.
Existing site managers, agents, surveyors and persons holding positions of managerial control should attend the Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course.

If you are sitting this course to acquire your CSCS Labourer card (replacing the Green Construction Site Operative (CSO) card as from the 1st July 2014, you would need to arrange for your Health, Safety and Environmental online test after this course on another date as per the new guideline’s to gain a Labourer card.
