What NEBOSH awards are available?
There are two award level
NEBOSH coursesto choose from. The NEBOSH health and safety at work qualification and the NEBOSH healthy, safety and the environment for process issues qualification.
Firstly lets take a look at the Health and Safety at Work Award. Devised as an introduction to occupational health ans safety issues, candidates includes supervisors, HR professionals and managers.
This
NEBOSH training course is comprised of a two units of of learning. The first HSW1 workplace safety foundations is made up of 10 different elements the
NEBOSH award covers issues such as the foundations of health and safety, responsibilities, risk assessment and control, work equipment, transport safety, electricity, fire safety, manual handling, repetitive movement, hazardous substances and general hazards in the working environment.
In HSW1, candidates are expected to received 17 hours of formal tuition by a tutor and do an additional three hours of private study. The second unit HSW2 is a workplace risk assessment, where candidates are assessed on how well they can apply the knowledge gained in HSW1 to a practical situation. This is estimated at about 4 hours in total, plus an hour for the assessment. Additionally candidates will be assed via a 1 hour multiple choice exam, based on the content of HSDW1.
Now lets compare this to the
NEBOSH environmental award. Aimed at process operators, technicians and team leaders the NEBOSH environmental award aims to introduce general health and safety and environmental management practices to those involved in the process industries.
Comprising of three modules, one of which is the same as the NEBOSH health and safety award the course should take around 38 hours of tuition time, with an additional 6 of private study time. As HSW1 is described above, we will focus on the other two
NEBOSH course modules here.
Firstly PS1: Process safety addresses systems to prevent loss of containment, common hazards in the process industry, integrity of plant, emergency response, all of which are underlined by an explanation fo the foundation for process safety. PS2 environmental management addresses control of emissions and risk assessments. Unlike the other NEBOSH award, there is no practical assessment for this course, just a 90 minute multiple choice assessment based on all three modules.
