The value of a NEBOSH Construction Course.
Currently the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health offer only one specialised construction course, known as the NEBOSH Construction Certificate
. This is the mid level course that NEBOSH offers, in between the award and diploma level courses.
However, it is offered as both national and international format courses. The national course is specifically constructed to include all necessary legislation that health and safety managers will need when conducting a project in the UK. The international course, although very similar in content to the national, does not cover the UK specific legislation, but is aimed at those wishing to pursue careers or projects overseas.
One of the key, but little recognised benefits is that the NEBOSH Construction Certificate
is modular. This means that the learning in divided into units, making it more manageable during study and for revision. In addition, as modules are assessed individually; in the event that you do not pass one; you only need retake that one and not the entire course, saving you time, the exam costs and most importantly effort!
Another important benefit of the NEBOSH Construction Certificate
is that it contains two modules specially related to the construction industry. As the dangers and difficulties health and safety officials within the industry can come across are well known, having a course that is explicitly designed to address these can be very valuable. The course is split into three main parts. Firstly, a general occupational health and safety module. Secondly, an in depth module specific to the construction industry and thirdly a practical application module.
Health and safety training is often thought as a theory based activity to be applied to practical situations, after retuning site. Of course most health and safety officers will tell you this is not the case, and the main aim of any health and safety training is to protect peoples' wellbeing and not theory for theories’ sake. A NEBOSH Construction Certificate
combines both theory and practical application, giving you a head start on applying what you have learnt to your work situation.
If the studying aspect of the NEBOSH Construction Certificate
is causing you some concern, you’ll be pleased to know that there are now two ways in which you can do this. The first is by distance learning. This entails the materials being sent out to you. You study at your own pace, deciding which modules you need to focus most on, and then take the exam when you feel confident. You will be provided with support by email, telephone and via social media.
The seconds is the classroom option. This is where you attend a prearranged course, with other delegates, at the trainer's venue. Here a NEBOSH trainer talks you through the materials and you have the chance to participate in the activities that they set and interact with the other candidates in your group.
Another advantage is that whatever course you choose, you can attend additional revision days run by trainers at their venues, allowing you to recap your understand before the assessments.
