Supervisor Safety Training - An Essential Qualification for all Site Supervisors
Many supervisors may be confused as to which training course to choose to make sure they get the best qualification available. There are a range of supervisor safety training
courses, some of which are run as in-house courses by training providers. These courses are designed by the trainer provider and are not accredited by an outside body.
The other option is to select an accredited supervisor safety training
course. The most popular of these is the Construction Industry Training Boards’ (CITB) Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS). This course is part of the CITB Site Safety Plus Scheme and is specifically designed to ensure that it covers the UKCG standards for site supervisors. The UKCG standards highlight that all supervisors should undergo supervisor safety training
lasting at least two days, covering both health and safety knowledge and supervisory skills necessary to be an effective and safe supervisor. By completing a supervisor safety training
course accredited by the CITB and recognised as meeting the UKCG standard, the successful candidate can be confident that their qualification will be accepted by the largest and most prestigious sites in the UK.
The SSSTS course runs over two days and is split between two main topics. The first is the promotion of the health and safety knowledge necessary to supervise in a safe way. This includes legislation such as The Health and Safety at Work Act – 1974 and how to identify and prevent risks. Also covered in the SSSTS courses are the areas of preventing and controlling fire, hazardous substances (COSHH), the construction design management regulations (CDM), working at heights, PPE (personal protective equipment), good practice on manual handling and how to report accidents and administer first aid.
The other part of the course is concerned with how to supervise a team effectively. This includes working with subcontractors, how to instruct your team successfully, tool box talks and dealing with conflicts in an effective manner. Combined these two elements ensure that supervisors are well prepared to take on their expected duties.
The CITB SSSTS supervisor safety training
course is assessed via a short multiple choice test at the end of the two days. The course is designed to convey all the information necessary to pass the assessment and no previous experience is needed to enrol on the SSSTS course. The trainers also monitor delegates’ interaction and responses during the course where they can offer guidance on any specific issues of concern.
The training materials needed for the SSSTS course are books tiled "Site Safety Simplified (GE 706/11)" and "Tool Box Talks (GT 700.) As delegates get to keep these, they serve as a great reference for when the course is finished. Most trainers provide the course materials in with the course price. However if you are unsure you can always ask that this is the case. If your time is limited you can use an online training search facility to do this for you. They can put this and any other questions you have to the trainers and find you the best price, most convenient location and the most suitable dates!
