Streetworks qualifications made easy, a guide.
Do you need a supervisor course or an operative course?
If you are already in the industry, you will probably know the answer to this. However if you new to NRSWA and are looking complete one of the
streetworks courses you may need a bit of help. If you are going to be completing tasks such as backfilling, excavations or reinstatement then you will be classed as an operative and will need one of the operatives’
streetworks courses.
If you will be managing others doing these tasks then you will be a supervisor and so will need one of the supervisors’
streetworks courses. It is important that you choose the correct course for the role that you will be doing, in order to be properly trained.
If you need to be able to do both roles, remember that you will have to do two separate training courses as you cannot train to be a supervisor and an operative on the same course.
Units into qualifications
Streetworks courses are split into units and qualifications. Different mixes of units result in the one of the six qualifications available for supervisors or operatives. Of course, it is essential that you complete the correct group of units for the qualifications that you will need as a street worker.
Luckily most training providers offer the most popular units, leading to the most used qualifications in a week block course. These include units 1-6 + 9 for operatives and units 1, 10-14 + 16 for supervisors.
Completing the operatives’ five day course results in qualifications O1 Excavation in the road/highway 001, 002 and 003, O2 Excavation, backfilling and reinstatement – cold lay 001, 002, 003, 004, 005 and 006, O5 Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways 001, 002 and 009 and O6 Signing, lighting and guarding 002.
While completing the supervisors’ five day course results in the following qualifications: S1 Monitor excavation in the road/highway 001, 010 and 011, S2 Monitor excavation, backfilling and reinstatement - construction layers 001, 010, 011, 012, 013 and 014, S3 Monitor reinstatement – hot and cold lay bituminous materials 001, 010 and 014, S5 Monitor reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways 001, 010 and 016 and S6 Monitor signing, lighting and guarding 010.
As you can see you cannot get all of the qualification from completing the five day supervisors’ or operatives’ course. There are additional units such as unit 7 and 8 for operatives and unit 15 for supervisors which need to be completed successfully to gain qualifications O3 Reinstatement – hot and cold lay bituminous materials, Reinstatement of concrete slabs O4 and S4 Monitor reinstatement of concrete slabs. If you need to hold these qualifications speak to an online service provider. They will be able to identify a trainer that can provide these for you.
