SMSTS (CITB) - An essential course for Site Managers working on UKCG sites
On 1st January 2010, the UKCG standards brought in their Health and Safety Charter. The aim of this charter is to improve health and safety practices within the construction industry. The UKCG are concerned with ensuing that those employed within construction are qualified, that risks to workers health are minimised and that improving health and safety is given top priority. The charter includes the introduction of the UKCG Supervisor Training Standard.
The UKCG Supervisor Training Standard consists of 2 main requirements:
The first is that all supervisors / site managers must have up to date health and safety knowledge. The UKCG require supervisors to attend a course with a duration of a minimum of 2 days to ensure that they have the correct and up to date health and safety knowledge and understanding.
The second is that all supervisors / site managers must be able to supervisor their works in a successful and safe way. The UKCG require delegates to have training that addresses being an effective supervisor / manager and covers how to lead, to intervene, how to address employee behavior and how to present information to workers in an effective and engaging way and include role plays on a certified course. So how do you or your company confirm to the UKCG Health and Safety Charter’s aims?
There are a number of courses that are endorsed by the UKCG and meet the standards. Both the Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS CITB) and Site Managers Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS CITB
) fall into this category.
The shorter two day SSSTS CITB course is aimed at those supervising gangs of workers. However for those with responsibility for managing sites and CDM (Construction Design Management), whether you are working on on UKCG site or looking to develop your career by working on a UKCG site in the future the 5 day SMSTS CITB
is worth considering.
The SMSTS CITB
course meets the UKCG requirements specifically in the following ways:
1. In regard to the first requirement that all supervisors / site managers must have up to date health and safety knowledge by attending a course of a minimum of 2 days to update delegates health and safety knowledge, the SMSTS CITB
course runs over 5 days and details current health and safety legal issues.
2. All supervisors / site managers must be able to supervisor their works in a successful and safe way and attain certification to prove this, the SMSTS CITB
course covers the ethical and moral responsibilities of supervising and practical issues such as encouraging good communication. On successful completion of the SMSTS course the delegate is awarded a certificate valid for 5 years.
Luckily for time pressed site managers there are 2 options when completing an SMSTS CITB
course. The first is to pick the course that runs over 5 day completed within one week or for those managers short on time, the second is to complete the course over 1 day a week for 5 weeks. These options are offered through the UK by a number of providers.
