SMSTS - A priority for all Site Managers!
The Site Managers Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is endorsed by the Construction Skills Industry Training Board (CITB) and is part of their well respected Site Safety Plus Scheme.
It is run by training providers throughout the UK and is five days in length. It can be run as a block course, which means attending five consecutive days at a trainer’s location. It can also be run as a day release course where delegates complete one day a week, over a five week period. This often suits people who have very busy schedules and cannot be released from their work responsibilities for a full week at a time. The SMSTS
course can also be delivered on your premises, the only conditions being that you will need a classroom type space, in which the trainer can teach and that there are four or more delegates attending the course (This minimum is set by the CITB, to encourage discussion and the sharing of good practice).
During these five days you will cover topics such as: how to manage health and safety on construction sites, defining your responsibilities and those of your team, how to set up a site safely, Construction Design Management, UK construction law, assessing risk, method statements, working at heights, in confined spaces, with demolition, excavation and electricity and how to write and deliver tool box talks.
The real essence of a SMSTS
course is to promote that safety and getting a job done in an efficient manner are not separate jobs, but can be done together for the good of the company and the individuals within it. Attendees are encouraged to promote this in their own teams and sites once the course has been completed.
course is assessed by a short, written multiple choice test, comprising of 25 questions, at the end of the course. Delegates are also often asked to make a short presentation on a case study relevant to the courses.
Once you have achieved your SMSTS
card, it is vital that you keep you knowledge up to date. This can be done by attending the two day, SMSTS refresher course. Your original SMSTS card is valid for five years, and the CITB also offer a six month grace period in which you can still complete the refresher. However, if you let your card expire over this time you will have to do the full five day course over again!
As there are a number of providers that offer the course, you may wish to consider which would provide the most convenient location, best price of dates best suited to your diary. The most efficient way of doing in this, saving you time, money and the hassle of doing it yourself, is to consult an online service. These services exist to make your life easier, while ensuring you get the best deal. They offer friendly advice, based in offices in the UK and should make the process of choosing and booking your SMSTS
course a breeze.
