New CITB SEATS Course – An Environmental Training Scheme in the Construction Sector
The SEATS course
is being developed by members of the UK Contractors Group (Costain, Skanska and Wates) and CITB-Construction Skills (Construction Industry Training Board - Cskills). The SEATS courses will be managed and accredited by Site Safety Plus, which is run by the CITB and as with the existing SSSTS and SMSTS courses, will be delivered through a network of accredited CITB trainers.
There is already a training program in place to ensure that trainers will be ready to deliver this new course and the course will be start to become available from the January 2013. The SEATS course
is fully expected to rapidly become a key competence qualification within the construction industry.
As environmental issues and the increasing levels of associated legislation within the construction sector become ever more prevalent it is expected that the SEATS training course will also become increasingly important going forward. It has never been more essential that contractors manage the impacts of their operations on the environment.
The SEATS course
is a one day training course designed to give delegates a practical understanding of the environmental impacts of construction processes. It also covers the relevant legislation and ways to achieve compliance with this legislation, as well as good and best practice techniques on site. It includes the following elements:
• The importance of the environment
• Environmental Management Systems and their implementation on site
• Ecological issues on site.
• Contaminated Land
• Management of Waste on the construction site.
• Pollution and Water Management
• Being a Good Neighbour during the construction process
• The use and management of Energy and Resources on site
As with the SSSTS course the SEATS course
will finish with a 25 question multiple-choice examination. Delegates achieving a 72% pass level will then receive a certificate to indicate that they have passed the SEATS course. A Note on SEATS Plus (SEATS +)
The one day SEATS course
is intended to be a supervisor level equivalent of SSSTS, and is focussed on practical day-to-day issues of implementing construction processes on site. However, in the future is it is expected that the SEATS+ course will be introduced and this will be pitched at the Site Manager level and be the equivalent to SMSTS. Although the format for the SEATS+ course is still evolving, it is expected that delegates will attend a SEATS course, and then successfully complete a series of distance learning (e-learning) modules which address planning phase and construction processes to minimise their environmental impacts.
So putting this in another way, the CITB Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme SEATS will be the environmental equivalent of the CITB Supervisor Site Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) and SEATS+ will become the environmental equivalent of the CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS).
