Finding the right CITB course for your business
With a range of CITB training
courses now on offer throughout the UK, it pays to be 100% sure that the course you pick is a good fit for your needs.
The most well known of all the CITB training
options are the SMSTS and SSSTS courses. The SMSTS or Site Managers Safety Training scheme is designed for candidates that have responsibility for managing a construction site. The SMSTS courses cover site management skills, as well as health and safety responsibilities of site managers and how to deliver tool box talks. They are the longest of the CITB training
courses at 5 days in length and candidates can choose to complete them in a week day block or as a day release option, one day per week over 5 weeks. Most trainers offer the SMSTS course on weekdays but a few do offer weekend courses. If you have a specific requirement, you need access to an online solutions provider. They have links with different provider located all over the UK. This means that they can compare the best dates, locations and prices and find you the best course possible. For candidates that have already completed the SMSTS course and are coming to the end of the card validity period (5 years), the SMSTS refresher is the correct choice. The CITB give delegates a grace period of 6 months from the expiry of their original card, to complete the refresher course. This is well worth doing as the refresher is a two day course, rather than a full five days and is significantly less in cost that the full course too. Remember though delegates are only eligible to take the refresher is they have sat the and passed the full course previously and their card is in date.
The SSSTS course or Site Supervisors Safety Training scheme is a two day CITB training
course. It is aimed at those candidates who are in charge of a team of workers on a construction site. Most of the SSSTS courses are run over two consecutive week days, but there are some trainers who occasionally run them over split days or a weekend. The SSSTS courses cover the skills of supervision on a construction site as well as the moral and legal responsibilities of a supervisor. A new development in the Site Safety Plus scheme is the introduction of the SSSTS refresher course. This is for candidates who have successfully passed the full SSSTS course and need to renew their qualification, without taking the full course again. The SSSTS refresher course is 1 day in length and candidates are able to sit the course if they are coming to the end of their 5 year validity period.
The PMSTS or Plant Managers Safety Training Scheme is another of the CITB training
courses available. Like the SMSTS in duration, the PMSTS is designed specifically for those managers working with specialised plant equipment. It provides guidance on management skills as well as specialised training on safe guarding health and safety whilst using and managing those using heavy plant machinery.
