Are you a site manager looking to improve health and safety?
There are a range of CITB courses
available for those working in construction.
The include CITB courses
for site managers (SMSTS, SMSTS refresher), site supervisors (SSSTS, SSSTS refresher), plant managers (PMSTS, PMSTS refreshers) and the more general options such as Achieving Behavioural Change (ABC), Site Sustainability Simplified and Health and Safety Awareness Training.
Of all the CITB courses
on offer, site managers are best suited to the SMSTS or SMSTS refresher options. This is because these courses have been specifically constructed to address all the key areas that a site manager, in particular, needs to cover to be effective on site. The SMSTS is one of the longer CITB courses
on offer, at five days in duration. It takes this amount of time because it covers in depth, issues such as the moral and legal responsibilities of a manager on site, hazard identification, and risk reduction, risk assessment and reporting and some basic management skills.
As with all the longer CITB courses
, managers can choose how to complete their mandatory five days study.
A day release course
The first option is the day release course. This course runs over a total of five weeks, with the delegate attending just a single day per week. Trainers often run the course on the same day every week, but occasionally they vary the days, either because of bank holidays or scheduling clashes. When booking a day release course, make sure that you know which days your course will be on. As each construction project is different, and needs a varied amount of input at each stage, the day release option can be really handy for delegates that will struggle to be away from their role on site, for more than a day at a time.
A block course
The second SMSTS course option is the block course. Block courses run over five consecutive week days. If you are about to start a new project and need the SMSTS qualification before you do, then a block course is an excellent option for you. It means you can complete it quickly, all in one go. Please bare in mind that certificates often take up to eight weeks to be processed by the CITB, but a reputable trainer will provide you with a letter of attendance to work with in the mean time.
The In – House option.
The in-house or dedicated SMSTS option is aimed at organisations rather than individuals. This is due to the fact that the CITB require a minimum of four delegates on the SMSTS course. This is to ensure a good course dynamic and interaction which aids leaning between the delegates. A dedicated course is when the trainer comes to your organisation and runs the course for you there. You can choose either block or day release, but block is often cheaper as the trainer has less travel to factor in. Savings can be made with an in-house course, because the trainer will quote a price for the course, travel and accommodation (if necessary). Then you can put on a number of delegates (up to the trainer set maximum) with possible savings on the per person price.
