If you are working in construction you will already have experienced how vital it is to have up to date health and safety training, you will know that not only does it save lives and ensure you are mindful of your own safety on site, but that a large majority of sites require it. For those in supervisory roles, that is first line managers, team leaders, supervisors or gang leaders, supervisor safety training
it is a must.
By completing supervisor safety training
you can be sure that you will have current knowledge on how to work efficiently and safely whilst directing you team to get the job done. The aim of supervisor safety training
courses are to ensure that you know what is expected of you as a supervisor and to prepare you to complete your duties in a safe manner.
The SSSTS course runs over two days and covers the following areas: how to induct new team members onto site, giving toolbox talks, making sure your team is familiar with your method statement, how to work with your site manager for a safer site, health and safety law, why health and safety is so vital in the construction industry and how to monitor site safety appropriately.
If you are not a great fan of exams, don’t panic as the SSSTS course is assessed in a couple of different ways. The first is by carrying out a toolbox talk. This is where supervisors get to do a short presentation to the others in the group on a topic covered in the course. The idea here is to prepare you to give short talks to your team on health and safety and the proper use of the equipment they will need for the job. The second way that the SSSTS course is assessed is by a short multiple choice exam with 25 questions, and you will have 30 minutes to complete this. In addition to this the trainer will observe how you participate in the discussions during the training and give you feedback and advice on any problem areas. Supervisor safety training
in the form of the SSSTS course is offered throughout the UK, by many different training providers so it is likely that there is a venue near to you that offers it. If you are unsure of where to go you can use on online search facility, they will assist you by comparing locations, prices and dates so you can pick the very best course for your needs. Most training providers offer the course materials in with the price which include: CITB Site Safety Simplified GE 706 and CITB Toolbox talks GT 700. You can then take these away with you for future reference.
The SSSTS course is valid for five years. As it is a short, two day course there is no refresher course available and you will have to complete the course again after this time to stay qualified. As their careers progress and they take on additional responsibilities, many supervisors chose to complete the Site Managers Safety Training Scheme, (SMSTS) course. However it is not necessary to hold a SSSTS qualification before embarking on the SMSTS.
