The full SMSTS
or Site Managers Safety Training scheme lasts for five days. For those delegates that need to complete the course quickly, perhaps between contracts, there is a block course. This means that all five days are run consecutively in the space of a working week. For those delegates who have a hectic schedule and cannot leave site for a full week, there is the day release course. This means that they can attend a single day a week, over five weeks to gain their SMSTS qualification.
course covers UK legislation such as CDM 2007, and The Health and Safety at Work ACT 1974. It also includes risk assessment, method statements and areas of potential hazard such as working at heights, electricity, confines spaces, demolition and excavation. It is usually delivered as a combination of information and activities to gauge and consolidate the delegate’s understanding. Assessment for the SMSTS
course is based around a 30 minute multiple choice test of 25 questions and the pass mark is 72%.
Site Managers that have completed the full SMSTS
course, can benefit from the refresher scheme. This means that once the five year validity period of their card is up, they can opt to do a shorter two day course, instead of completing the whole five days all over again. They must do this within six months of the end of their card validity. If they do not complete the SMSTS refresher in this time, they will have to complete the full course from scratch again.
A key point to remember when booking the SMSTS course is not to confuse it with the SSSTS. The Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme course is a shorter two day course, aimed at team leaders, rather than site managers. It goes into less depth and is not suitable for those with responsibility for the entire construction site.
It is also worth checking that the training provider you are booking with, includes CITB registration fees and books in the price of the course. The books you will need are Construction Site Safety (GE700) and SMSTS
course notes (XA6). Be careful here, as some providers only loan you the notes for the duration of the course and many delegates like to take these home and use them as an on-going reference in the work place.
As the SMSTS is such a popular course, there are many training providers offering it, in locations all over the country. This is really useful as it means that many delegates, often do not have to travel far and that they have a choice of day release and block courses. It also provides the additional advantage of making the cost of the course more competitive. However, shopping around from provider to provider can be very time consuming, so use an online service provider to do this for you. Working with numerous trainers, an online service provider can find you the cheapest, soonest closest course, saving you time, money and hassle.
