Value Stream Mapping for Business Processes
Value Stream Mapping for Business Processes

As well as being a powerful manufacturing improvement technique, Value Stream Mapping is equally effective when applied to business processes. Here, the focus is on primary and secondary processes rather than material and information flow, and there are differences in the way that value stream calculations are carried out. However, the principle of identifying interruptions to flow and prioritising improvement actions remains unchanged.

Having drawn and agreed the ‘current state map’, an improvement team can create its future state vision, based on ‘Lean’ principles. Initially, significant improvements can often be achieved with relatively small press adjustments, but an ambitious future state vision may lead to more fundamental process changes. Thus Value Stream Mapping can be used both as a tactical improvement tool, and as a longer-term strategic planning and improvement tool.
