Understanding Information Systems (UIS)
Categories: IT for Beginners
Overview
This course provides a gateway for a successful career in IT or working with IT professionals. Newcomers to Information Systems are faced with a bewildering range of procedures, terminology, techniques and concepts. In addition, they need to understand the different steps involved in system development and their purpose. They need to understand not only technical terminology but also how 'user' knowledge and technical skills can jointly produce systems that meet business requirements.

The technology and concepts of corporate business computing are explained in clear terms. Delegates will learn the role and nature of the varying IS functions through a practical case study. This allows them to play an effective role within, or in partnership with, their information technology department.

This is a valuable entry point that prepares delegates for subsequent formal training in their specialist area.

Course Objectives
To introduce and provide a foundation for understanding the variety of technical and hardware concepts involved in system development plus the different steps involved in building systems to deliver business solutions. To enable delegates to discuss system requirements with experienced IT staff, using appropriate terminology and jargon.

Who will the course benefit?
Those starting a career in information systems or needing to broaden their knowledge and expertise. Non-IT professional and support staff, who need to communicate with, and understand the work of computer specialists. People from a less technical background that need to work with developers and understand their responsibilities.
Senior and middle managers in need of an understanding of IT and their role in the systems development life cycle.

What skills will the delegate gain?
This course will enable delegates to:
• Relate system requirements to business objectives.
• Recognise the stages of a project, describe their purpose, and understand the roles played by ‘User’ staff and IT specialists.
• Describe the system in terms of hardware features, general configuration of networks and processing.
• Assess and review specifications and diagrams produced through systems analysis and design, recognising ‘logical’ and ‘physical’ views.
• Communicate on equal terms with experienced user and IT staff.

Pre-Requisites
