Course overview
Statutory accounts (the ones filed at Companies House) are getting ever more complex.
This course shows you how to navigate your way around a set of company accounts to
find the information you want. It will enable you to understand the balance sheet, profit
and loss account and cash flow and draw your own conclusions about the financial
statements published by your customers, suppliers and competitors!

Course content 
- The difference between management accounts and statutory accounts 
- What to look for in an audit report 
- What are the basic accounting concepts 
- The profit and loss account and the five profit figures: 
- PBIT/EBIT, EBITDA, PBT/EBT, PAT and retained profit 
- Understanding the balance sheet: fixed assets and depreciation, stock, debtors, cash,
creditors, capital and reserves 
- The working capital cycle 
- Cash flow statement – why profit does not equal cash 
- Turnover, profit margins and trends 
- An introduction to ratios; liquidity & current ratio, how to calculate these and when to
use them 
- The importance of return on equity (ROE) and return on capital employed (ROCE)

The course focuses on understanding the annual report and accounts (statutory audited
accounts) and uses many different sets of accounts – from small companies through to
plcs - to ensure you know how to apply each concept to real world situations.
