Aim and Objectives

To provide course members with the skills and knowledge to carry out moving and
handling risk assessments and implement suitable risk controls in health and social care
settings at ward, department or home level, for people and objects.

On completion of this course delegates will be able to: 
- explain the role of relevant legislation and guidelines relating to safer moving and handling and their role as a risk assessor. 
- explain and demonstrate the principles of risk assessment and its application in a health or social care setting. 
- identify moving and handling hazards and discuss risk factors and appropriate controls. 
- compare and contrast risk assessment forms.

Who is the Course Intended for?
People who have responsibility for carrying out moving and handling risk assessments in
the health or social care sector.

Prior knowledge
Experience in moving and handling people and/or objects. Delegates attending this module are likely to have already attended the Safer People Handling Trainer’s Course or plan to attend in the near future. For delegates not taking this route it is important to recognise that risk assessments should be undertaken in close liaison with affected parties, such as back care advisors, moving and handling trainers and key/link workers.

Pre-course Preparation
Delegates will be asked to bring risk assessment documentation used in the workplace.

- An overview of back pain/musculo-skeletal injury 
- Risk factors in moving and handling 
- Legal requirements with respect to moving and handling 
- An ergonomic, systematic approach to risk assessment 
- Risk reduction strategies 
- People handling assessments and documentation 
- Appropriate equipment purchase based an evaluation and assessment 
- Evaluation of risk assessment forms 
- Networking of techniques.

Qualification and Certification
Delegates who complete the course and pass the written examination, will be awarded a
RoSPA Safer People Handling Risk Assessment Certificate. The certificate is valid for
three years. Prior to the expiry of this period delegates will be required to attend and
successfully complete a Re-qualification Course.

Continuing Development
Optional seminars will be available within the intervening three-year period for networking and updating.

Additional courses are available for delegates requiring additional skills and knowledge in specialised areas.
