Aims and Objectives
On completion of this course delegates will be able to:
- To provide delegates with the practical skills and knowledge required for training and
educating others in the theory and practice of hoist use in health and social care settings.
- Explain the role legislation relevant to the use of a hoist and its attachments.
- Explain current best practice relating to the use of a hoist.
- Describe the range of patient/client lifting equipment available to the Health and Social Care Provider.
- Explain the need for a balanced approach in relation to Human Rights and health and safety legislation when implementing the use of a hoist as a handling intervention.
- Explain the importance of a written assessment process and a documentation in relation to the justification and clinical reasoning behind the selection of a type of hoist and sling for an individual.
- Explain the importance of recording a safe system of work for employees to follow when they are using a hoist on an individual.
- Explain the importance of applying the principles of safer handling when using a hoist and a fitted sling and demonstrate them.
- How to fit hoist slings and operate the hoist for a variety of tasks, incorporating all safety checks.
Who is the Course Intended for?
This course has been developed for employees who have a responsibility within their organisation to implement safe systems of work for people handling and those with designated responsibilities to train and supervise staff in the use of hoists. It is also suitable for practitioners who may manage equipment.
Prior knowledge
All applicants must have attended a RoSPA Safer People Key Handler’s course or equivalent (within the last 3 years) and have a recognised training qualification e.g. City and Guilds 7307 or extensive experience in training.

- An overview of current legislation
- Case law that impacts on practice relating to use of the hoist
- Types of hoists and slings available
- Safety aspects of a hoist
- Hoist and sling assessment and selection
- Sling compatibility
- Documentation and handling plans
- Recap of the principles of safe handling
- Practical workshops incorporating sling fitting and operation of a range of hoists
- Problem solving.
Qualification and Certification
All delegates who successfully complete the course in full will be awarded a ‘RoSPA
