Positive risk-taking based on service user strengths

Good risk management approaches involve positive risk-taking (positive risk management). Indeed, if practitioners did not work in this way, service users would not be enabled to learn, grow and change by taking measured and justifiable risks through supportive clinical approaches. When considering positive risk-taking, most practitioners find they are working in this kind of way as it is, of course, good clinical practice. However, this type of approach
tends to just happen, rather than being considered and discussed with colleagues through a recognised structure where the formulation of ideas and plans are appropriately documented.

Course content:
- Looking at what positive risk-taking is within clinical practice
- Developing ideas of what is needed to effectively support this approach
- Identifying and working with service user strengths, abilities, skills and interests
- Enhancement of how positive risk-taking is discussed, agreed and documented
- Considering development of clinical practice in the context of positive risk-taking.

Who should attend?

Community psychiatric nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, psychiatrists, in-patient nurses, psychologists and any mental health practitioner working in the statutory, voluntary or private sector who formulates risk management / working with risk plans as part of their remit; senior managers and anyone who is responsible for risk management strategies within mental health services.
