Aims and Objectives

The NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is the flagship NEBOSH award and is the first UK vocational qualification to be developed specifically for health and safety professionals. Since its introduction in 1988 it has become established as the most popular qualification of its kind, with over 10,000 students having successfully gained the Diploma.

The NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety provides the core health and safety knowledge (transferable across industry, commerce and the public sector) which, combined with understanding and appropriate application, underpins the competent performance of an Occupational Health and Safety Practitioner.

The qualification is divided into four units, each of which is assessed separately:
Unit A: Managing health and safety
Unit B: Hazardous agents in the workplace
Unit C: Workplace and work equipment safety
Unit D: Application of health and safety theory and practice

Units A, B and C are each assessed by a 3 hour exam held on nationally set days in January and July each year. Unit D is assessed by a 12,000 word workplace based project which is submitted to NEBOSH in March or September of each year. You can take your exams together or spread them over a period, but to achieve the full qualification all units must be completed within 5 years of enrolment. We recommend exams are taken together following the course.

Holders of the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety may use the designatory letters “DipNEBOSH” after their name.

The qualification meets the academic requirements to apply for Graduate Membership (Grad IOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). This is the first step to becoming a Chartered Health and Safety Practitioner as a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH). It also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) as meeting the academic requirements for full membership (MIIRSM). The National Diploma provides a sound basis for progression to MSc level: A number of UK universities offer MSc programs that accept the National Diploma as a full or partial entry requirement.

Who should attend?

The NEBOSH National Diploma is the qualification for aspiring health and safety professionals, building directly upon the foundation of knowledge provided by the NEBOSH National General Certificate. It is designed to provide students with the expertise required to undertake a career as a safety and health practitioner and also provides a sound basis for progression to postgraduate study.

There no formal entry requirements for this qualification, however candidates should consider that this is professional level qualification, approximately equivalent to Level 6 (degree level). Achievement of the NEBOSH National General Certificate or direct equivalent prior to undertaking the Diploma course is highly recommended.

Course material

Each delegate will be issued with a course workbook to assist them both during and after the course – this workbook will contain information, guidance and forms to assist them. The course is designed to be highly interactive, allowing delegates the opportunity to develop their skills with the support of the course tutor.

Delegates are also issued with 3 official NEBOSH study books, and an exam preparation pack including past exam papers and other examination guidance.

Course tutor
Our health and safety consultants are qualified and experienced professionals with a background in delivering engaging and effective training. All trainers hold Chartered or Graduate membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

Duration

The course will be delivered over 35 days in total, delivered in blocks of one week (a total of 7 weeks spread over 4 months).

As well as the 35 tuition days, candidates should be aware there is a significant element of private self study required. NEBOSH estimate this to be 225 hours spread over the duration of the course; however this will vary from candidate to candidate depending on past experience and knowledge.

There is an optional 3 day revision module held at the completion of the course and prior to the exams, which can be booked either at the time of booking or at any time during your course.

Certification

On successful completion of the 3 exams and project you will receive a NEBOSH accredited qualification: the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. All exams are marked externally by NEBOSH appointed examiners.

To acknowledge the achievements of successful Diploma candidates NEBOSH holds an annual Graduation & Awards Ceremony. Eligible Diplomats will be invited to book a place at this prestigious event in April or shortly after your results are issued.
