Manual Handling
Course Aim
Most workplaces still involve a considerable amount of lifting and moving. Loads that need to be lifted or moved can often be heavy, awkward, repetitive or even dangerous. Accidents as a result of manual handling activities account for approximately a third of all workplace injuries.
Damage to the back and other parts of the body can cause ill health, ruin lives and affect businesses.
The course is suitable for people who are involved in manual handling. It would also be suitable for those who act in a supervisory or management role and need to be aware of their responsibilities in relation to manual handling operations.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course delegates will be able to:
- Explain what is meant by the term ‘manual handling’
- Understand the implications of lifting and moving loads
- List the causes of manual handling injuries.
- Understand and conduct a basic risk assessment for manual handling.
- Demonstrate the kinetic method of safe lifting.

Course content includes:
- What is manual handling?
- Accidents and injuries from manual handling
- consequences arising from manual handling injuries
- Causes of manual handling injuries
- Causes of back pain
- The spine, its structure and function
- Four basic requirements for manual handling

3.25 hours contact time i.e. half day

Competence based, valid for 3 years
