This course leads to Associate Membership of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

Duration:
A 10-day course

About the Course:
This course will: 
- Give staff who are new to the topic a comprehensive understanding of Environmental Management issues 
- Equip your staff to introduce, implement and maintain Environmental Management systems within your organisation 
- Provide an entry level qualification for staff who wish to develop a career that includes Environmental Management and who pass the exam and assessment criteria 
- Give credits towards auditor qualifications for those who pass the exam and assessment criteria.

Objectives:
The course is designed to develop the professional competence of delegates by assessing their knowledge and understanding of Environmental Management and its application. The knowledge areas comprise of three modules which will enable delegates to:

Module 1:
Environmental sustainability - Understand the issues, science and philosophy that underpin environmental sustainability to a level that enables a general presentation to be made

Module 2:
Environmental legislation - Identify relevant legislation for an organisation and take initial steps towards ensuring compliance

Module 3:
Assessment, interpretation and management of environmental performance - Understand the role of various analytical and managerial tools and the assessment, interpretation and management of environmental performance.

Assessment:
The course programme will be spread over 80 hours (equivalent to 10 days in total).

Environmental Sustainability (IEMA Module 1) will be covered first to ensure that delegates have a sound foundation in global issues. The key learning objectives of IEMA Modules 2 & 3 will be covered in classroom sessions through a combination of tutoring, exercises and a site awareness visit. In this way, delegates complete the course with a thorough understanding of best practice.

Course marks will be divided between continuous assessment and a final day exam. 40% of the course marks will be awarded for continuous assessment in exercises and 60% for the examination at the end of week 1 and week 2.

A total of 1.5 hours will be available for each examination.

Course Style:
All sessions are interactive and delegate participation is encouraged. Delivery will include presentation by lecture, overhead and slide projection. There are numerous exercises and each activity is assessed as part of the overall delegate evaluation.

The course will include a site visit so delegates can see first hand environmental management in operation. All course presenters have experience of developing an EMS and some have experience of EMS certification and assessment and EMAS verification.

Preparation:
There is no requirement for previous experience or knowledge for this entry level programme.
