Course Aim
The First Aid Regulations 1981 require employees to provide sufficient trained first aid personnel for their workplace. This course is intended to provide the necessary training to enable delegates to become the designated “First Aider at Work”. The delegates will gain knowledge and understanding, and more importantly the confidence and skills to be able to carry out first aid in the workplace.

An independent assessor will deem delegates competent.

The subject matter covered will allow delegates to fulfil the three prime aims of first aid: to preserve life, to prevent the condition worsening and to promote the casualties recovery.

Course Objectives
By the end of the course delegates will be able to:
- List the five factors which will enable them to assess a situation
- Explain primary and secondary surveys
- Demonstrate CPR, resuscitation & jaw thrust
- Demonstrate the recovery position & log roll
- Identify and treat a casualty suffering from shock
- Demonstrate bandaging for different types of wounds
- Recognise and treat disorders of the skeleton
- Identify different types of thermal injury and their treatment
- Understand the importance of record keeping

Content
Course content includes:
- AMEGA action plan
- Mechanisms of injury
- Primary & secondary surveys
- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, resuscitation & blocked airways
- Special cases
- Recovery position, log roll & moving a casualty
- Shock, circulatory system & circulatory failure
- Wounds
- Control of minor & major bleeding and internal bleeding
- Head injuries and causes of unconsciousness
- Sprains, strains & dislocations
- Fractures
- Spinal injuries
- Thermal injuries
- Poisons
- Minor illnesses and injuries
- Legislation and record keeping
 
Course Duration:
26 hours contact time i.e. four days

Type of Certificate:
Competence based, valid for 3 years
