Course Aim

This course is intended to provide a very basic first aid qualification for any person who may have to deal with an emergency situation. It should enable them to be able assess and control a situation until more qualified help arrives.

The subject matter covered will allow delegates to fulfil the three prime aims of first aid: to preserve life, to prevent the condition worsening and to promote the casualties recovery.

Course Objectives
By the end of the course delegates will be able to:
- List the five factors which will enable them to assess a situation
- Explain primary and secondary surveys
- Demonstrate CPR and resuscitation
- Demonstrate the recovery position
- Identify and treat a casualty suffering from shock
- Demonstrate bandaging for different types of wounds
- Recognise and treat disorders of the skeleton
- Identify different types of thermal injury and their treatment
- Understand the importance of record keeping

Course content includes:
- AMEGA action plan
- Primary & secondary surveys
- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
- Recovery position
- Shock & anaphylactic shock
- Wounds
- Control of minor and major bleeding
- Causes of unconsciousness
- Sprains, strains & dislocations
- Fractures
- Thermal Injuries
- Poisons
- Record keeping

Course Duration:
6.5 hours contact time i.e. one day

Type of Certificate:
Competence based, valid for 3 years

Health & Safety Executive
