Course Aim

Each year the fire brigades attend 35,000 fires in the workplace. These fires kill approximately 30 people and injure another 2000.

The Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997, the Construction (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1996 and others require employers to take certain actions. These include a risk assessment, appointment of competent persons, fire safety arrangements and identifying individuals to act as Fire Marshals/Fire Wardens.

The course is suitable for people who have or are going to be appointed as a Fire Marshal/Warden It would also be suitable for those who act in a supervisory or management role and need to be aware of their responsibilities in relation to fire safety arrangements.

Course Objectives
- By the end of the course delegates will be able to:
- Discuss the causes of fires and measures designed to prevent fires occurring
- Explain the basic principles of combustion and extinction
- List the classification of fires
- List the correct procedure to be carried out upon discovering a fire
- Explore the role of the Fire Marshal/Warden
- Understand and conduct a basic fire risk assessment.
- Demonstrate the correct use of portable fire fighting equipment to extinguish a fire.

- Fire Authorities & Fire Certificates
- Planning fire arrangements
- Causes of fire and preventative measures
- Triangle of combustion and extinction
- Classification of fires
- Fire action plan and assembly point
- Duties and responsibilities for Fire Marshal/Warden
- Assessment of fire risks
- Fire extinguishers and their uses
- Practical demonstration of extinguishers on a class B fire

Course Duration:
6.5 hours contact time i.e. one day

Type of Certificate:
Competence based, valid for 3 years
