Effective Supervisory Management - Part 2

Coach and counsel your team to handle change

Most organisations have access to the same information and new technologies, so these days it’s the quality of your people that makes the difference. In a business environment where change is the only constant, coaching, counselling and correction are the crucial people management skills. This course builds on the ideas, tools and techniques learned on Effective Supervisory Management - Part 1 and extends communications skills by showing you how to influence people and how to take the ‘chair’ at meetings. You’ll be shown the necessary skills and techniques and then you benefit from participating and acting as an observer in practical coaching exercises and counselling role-plays. Case studies offer you a chance to try out problem solving and decision making techniques in a supportive learning environment where you can afford to ‘crash’ a few times without doing any serious damage.

Topics & Outcomes

The learning organisation
In a rapidly changing business environment continuous learning isn’t desirable. If you’re going to stay competitive it’s essential! Understand how to integrate learning into every day to day activity your team gets involved in.

Performance management
We’ll show you how to identify Key Result Areas (KRAs) select ‘Key Performance Indicators’ (KPIs) and agree realistic achievable targets with each member of your team so that they can achieve their objectives and yours!

Personal development planning
Learn how to focus on the key development needs of each member of your team and get them to take ownership of their own ‘Personal Development Plan’. Understand the potential links between departmental reviews, career development and succession planning.

Individual and team coaching exercises
You’ll see how you can identify needs and opportunities to improve performance through coaching, and have a chance to practice the skills needed to develop and implement truly effective coaching programmes.

The Counselling Model and Role-play exercises
Understand how to plan and deliver counselling support to help any member of your team face up to their problems and then exchange constructive ideas and tips with the others in role-play feedback and analysis sessions.

How to be a better change manager
We’ll persuade you to recognise the inevitability of change and show you how to adopt a more systematic approach to forecasting the likely sources of change. The ‘Teamwork for a Change’ case study will develop your change awareness and help you to feel confident in your ability to handle change smoothly. Learn how to allocate tasks or projects according to the different change orientation of individual team members.

Getting more out of meetings
You’ll learn how to plan and conduct meetings and influence others so that every discussion leads to a clear decision, and every decision is carried through into the follow-up actions you were looking for.

Problem solving and decision making
The ‘Designed to Fail’ case study shows the importance of identifying both short-term objectives to address the effects and longer-term objectives to eliminate the causes of current, pending and potential problems. You’ll clearly understand how to separate underlying causes from symptoms and effects and you can practice using brainstorming techniques to generate potential solutions. The ‘Typical Supervisory Management Problems’ questionnaire is discussed, and an analysis of your answers will provide you with a decision making profile showing the strengths and weaknesses in your style. Learn how to match the decision making approach to the type of decision, and practice using the influencing skills needed to persuade others to accept your decisions.

Managing time and reducing stress
You’ll be shown how to use ‘TACK Task Lists’ to ensure that you stick to priorities and you’ll pick up ideas on how you and your team can cope with the symptoms and the causes of stress in today’s high-pressure environment.

Action planning for improved performance using ‘Purple Pages’
A ‘Purple Page’ is issued for each key topic covered suggesting follow-up actions for you to implement at work. You’re also invited to add ideas of your own. You can then prioritise the list into a comprehensive action plan to help you develop your skills and impress others with the outstanding performance of your team.

Programme high spots
- The practical coaching exercise is great fun but also so valuable because it shows how the performance of both individuals and teams can be permanently improved
- People find it easy to relate the ‘Teamwork for a Change’ exercise to their real work situation and enjoy learning how to cope with each different ‘change animal’

Who will benefit?
This Part 2 course builds on the skills from Effective Supervisory Management - Part 1, but will also benefit any other team leaders, managers or supervisors who lack formal training in coaching and counselling or in handling the problems of change.
