Driver CPC Training
What is driver CPC?
The Driver CPC is a scheme for LGV and PSV drivers who drive professionally in the UK. It has been developed to meet the requirements of the EU Directive 2003/59, which is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of professional LGV and PSV drivers throughout their working life.
When will the Driver CPC scheme start?
Changes to Legislation that underpin the Driver CPC took place in 22nd March 2007 and the Driver CPC for LGV drivers must be implemented by 10 September 2009.
The EU passed the Driver CPC EU Directive in 2003. This will affect all professional LGV and PSV drivers. For new drivers it introduces a new initial qualification, the Driver CPC, which increases the amount of knowledge that drivers need before they can drive.
When combined with licence acquisition tests, the initial qualification includes a four hour theory test and a two hour driving and practical test.
All drivers, new and existing, will then have to undertake 35 hours of training every five years to ensure that their Driver CPC is current. This is known as Periodic Training.
Only courses that have been approved - and are being delivered by a training centre that has been approved - by the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training (JAUPT) will count towards the Periodic Training requirement.
Periodic Training is designed to confirm, and expand on, the existing knowledge and skills of each driver to ensure that they continue to be safe, courteous and fuel-efficient drivers.
This will enable drivers to keep up-to-date with ever changing regulations and benefit from training throughout their whole career. This Directive became effective on 10 September 2008 for the PSV sector and will come into effect on 10 September 2009 for the LGV sector. For further information on Periodic Training please contact the JAUPT’s advice line.
Who does Driver CPC apply to?
Existing Drivers (PSV & LGV)
All drivers of PSV vehicles, holding a category D, D1, D+E or D1+E licence at 10 September 2008. All drivers of LGV vehicles, holding a category C, C1, C+E or C1+E licence at 10 September 2009
New Drivers
New drivers who gain their initial Driver CPC after 10 September 2008 (PSV) or 10 September 2009 (LGV) will immediately begin their cycle of periodic training upon receipt of their Driver Qualification Card (DQC) and will need to complete 35 hours of training within five years of attaining their initial Driver CPC.
How much training is required?
All drivers must undertake 35 hours of training in every five-year period. The minimum length of a training course that contributes to the Periodic Training requirement is seven hours which we deliver over five one day modules
