Design Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (Design FMEA)

Design FMEA enables designers to identify product failures before they happen. It is a systematic procedure which facilitates engineering design and NPI by establishing potential product failures, minimising design deficiencies, and improving product verification. FMEA is a mandatory requirement for many companies and provides a process for categorising failures in order to prioritise items of risk.

Course Content
Introduction to FMEA
- The need for FMEA
- Objectives and benefits, including right-first-time, quality improvement and lowering overall product cost

Types of FMEA
- The three main types of FMEA and their differences

Functional Analysis
- Ensuring a customer focused FMEA

The Design FMEA
- Failure Mode, Effects and Severity: develops the functional approach to FMEA and uses it to identify failure modes and effects, and to set priorities using the severity rating scale
- Cause, Occurrence and Criticality: identifying all realistic causes of failure and setting priorities using the Occurrence Rating Table
- Design Evaluation and Detection: using the detection rating table risk priority number and corrective action

Management of Design FMEA
- Examines key pointers in the development and improvement of FMEA using a team-based approach.
