Communication Tactics with Deaf and Deafblind People.
About the Course:
In the course of their daily lives, deaf and hard of hearing people are meeting service providers who are unaware of basic tactics for communicating with them, leading to frustration and distress of both sides. The situation can be improved by developing knowledge and skills in the use of simple communication tactics, covered in this one day course.
The tactics taught will not overcome all the barriers between deaf, deafblind and hearing people, but they will provide the learner with simple tips and confidence to maximize the success of the first encounter with a deaf or deafblind person.
Lunch, refreshments and all course materials are provided.
The topics covered are
- Communication choices of different groups e.g. deaf, deafblind, hard of hearing, deafened people
- How these groups describe themselves - acceptable and non acceptable terminology
- Learning how to speak clearly and other tips e.g. finger spelling, which can aid communication with deaf people
- Finger spelling - the alphabet
- How different levels and types of deafness affect communication between deaf and hearing people
- When, how and with which group of deaf people to use particular communication tactics
Target Audience:

Assessment:
This is a short practical course run at The Source in conjunction with Doncaster College, which includes assessment leading to a QCA Accredited unit.
