Who Should Attend?

This training course is a National Occupational Standard (NOS) for the water industry. The NOS embodies the skill and knowledge elements as part of the requirement for candidates to become competent. It is designed for managers, supervisors and operatives who may need to enter or supervise the entry into High Risk Confined Spaces for the water industry and carry out a variety of work activities.

Requirements:Delegate must be over 16 years of age.

You will need to prove the delegate is medically fit (to Section 7 Water UK Occasional Guidance Note [OGN]).

The course can only be taken in English.

Aim

To provide delegates with a thorough understanding of Confined Space procedures for the water industry, the dangers of confined spaces and to enable them to carry out an entry to work in a Confined Space wearing Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and escape sets.

Course Content

At the end of the training course delegates should be able to:

Show an understanding of current legislation and water industry Occasional Guidance Note (OGN).

Recognise and classify a confined space.

Produce Safe Systems of Work for entry into confined spaces.

Recognise diseases and understand the necessary personal hygiene requirements associated with confined spaces.

Use gas detection equipment in hazardous atmospheres.

Use personal protective equipment, i.e. ropes, BA Boards, harnesses and man riding hoists.

Use Escape Breathing Apparatus and Self-contained Breathing Apparatus.

Knowledge

At the end of the training course delegates should know:

The dangers associated with confined space working.

How to risk assess a confined space.

How to classify a confined space.

The types of Escape Breathing Apparatus and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus.

How to undertake pre-entry and pre-wearer checks on equipment.

The necessary manning levels.

Why there is a need for periodic examinations of equipment.

The emergency procedures when working in a confined space.

Training Methods

A high proportion of practical exercises which will be supplemented with classroom based tutorials.

Additional Information

The content of this course includes awareness of periodic examinations of equipment. The course does not provide full training in maintenance of equipment. Additional training relating to this subject may be of benefit to delegates (further information available upon request).

Delegates should inform their trainer if they have any serious health issues, physical problems or are taking any medication which may create difficulties in undertaking elements of this training course.
