- Accidents in the workplace: the nature of accidents and common causes; near misses and the accident triangle; reporting and investigating; key causes and prevention – workplace, work equipment, fire, electricity, manual handling
- Ill health in the workplace: the nature of illness and disease, monitoring ill health, key causes and prevention – hazardous substances, noise, ergonomics, stress, violence at work
- Legal provisions: employer and employees rights and responsibilities, penalties and enforcement powers, sources of information
- Organisation and management: the need for a management approach, risk assessment, auditing and monitoring
- Supervising health and safety: the role of the supervisor
