WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Managers and Supervisors who are responsible for the safe operation of water systems and cooling towers and for the supervision of staff who operate and maintain such systems:
• Building / Facilities Managers
• Site Supervisors
• Maintenance Managers
• Engineering Managers

Before taking this course, candidates must have successfully completed P901- Legionella-
Management and control of domestic type hot and cold water services.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES
To provide background and an overview of the risk of legionella infection and how it can be controlled in Evaporative Cooling and other high risk type Systems.

To outline the means for controlling the risk of legionella in water systems (including cooling towers, evaporative condensers and fluid coolers) including the appraising the competence and performance of specialist contractors or subcontractors.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES
Having attended the course delegates should be able to demonstrate management control with
regards:
• Identifying the common options for heat rejection devices other than open evaporative cooling systems.
• Demonstrating an understanding of the basic principle of open evaporative cooling.
• Outlining a risk assessment led approach to cooling tower fill pack removal for cleaning and
also assessment of cleanliness.
• Identifying the main types of open evaporative cooling devices and their key components.
• Understanding in general terms the operation and importance of drift eliminators.
• Outlining the principles of a legionella control regime, including the key elements of chemical treatment and control; outline a suitable monitoring programme.
• Outlining the hardness cycle and explaining the primary effect and significance of base exchange softening.
• Outlining the conditions required for effective application of non-oxidising and oxidising
biocides.

COURSE OUTLINE
The course will include:
• Design and operation of cooling towers and types of systems at risk
• Overview of the legal requirements - general duties, risk assessment, risk control, monitoring and record keeping.
• HSE Guidance L8
• Principles of safe plant operation
• Water treatment –cleaning, disinfection and corrosion control.
• Microbiological aspects – samples and testing
• Site visit

Duration: 1 day

Max. no. of delegates: 8 per course

Fee: £245 course + £125 exam (ex. VAT)

Delegates will be expected to complete an examination set by the BOHS and submit a report, to
demonstrate that they have carried out at least one field assessment of water systems under their direct or indirect control.

Upon successful completion of the course and attainment of 50 % pass mark in both elements,
delegates will be awarded a Proficiency Certificate from the BOHS.
