ASB1 Asbestos Awareness

Course Aim:
Asbestos-related diseases are currently responsible for about 3000 deaths a year in the UK. These diseases can take from 15 to 60 years to develop, from first exposure, so you would not be aware of any sudden change in your health after breathing in asbestos fibres.

The importation and use of blue and brown asbestos has been banned by law since 1985. In 1999 the importation, supply and use of white asbestos was also banned. Many thousands of tonnes of asbestos were used in building in the past. Much of it is still there and you cannot easily identify it from its appearance.

The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002 place specific responsibilities on employers and employees.

This course is designed for anyone who may, as part of their work activity, come into contact with asbestos containing materials (ACMs). It will be particularly useful for anyone involved in building maintenance, repair or refurbishment work, such as plumbers, carpenters and electricians. It will also be useful to other workers, for example computer installers, cabling installers, fire alarm installers and telecommunication engineers who may disturb asbestos during their work. Safety representatives will also find this useful.

Course Objectives:
- Have knowledge of the duties of anyone working with asbestos containing materials
- Understand the need for risk assessment when working on asbestos containing materials
- Understand the dangers to health from exposure to asbestos fibres
- Demonstrate an awareness of the uses and location of asbestos

Course content includes:
- History of the use of asbestos
- Overview of the legislation controlling asbestos
- Health risks from exposure to asbestos fibres
- Where and in what form you would find asbestos
- Risk assessment and asbestos
- PPE / RPE and asbestos
- Managing asbestos

Course Duration:
6.5 hours contact time i.e. full day

Type of Certificate:
Competence based, valid for 3 years
