Course Aims and Objectives.

To enable operatives to change an abrasive wheel in compliance with The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER); and to use abrasive tools in a safe and efficient manner.

Enabling Objectives
At the close of the course the candidate will be able to: 
- Recognise all types of abrasive wheels and discs. 
- State the importance of wheel, and equipment, operating speeds. 
- Inspect and test all types of grinding wheel before fitting. 
- Demonstrate the correct method of stacking bench-grinding wheels. 
- Correctly read, and interpret, the information on a grinding disc. 
- State the reason for the shape of the machine arbor. 
- Quote the correct angle for using an angle grinder. 
- List and select the suitable Personal Protective Equipment needed to change, and use, a grinding wheel and disc. 
- Disable grinding wheel equipment before changing a wheel or disc. 
- Correctly fit a wheel or disc to grinding wheel or disc equipment. 
- Correctly set the gap between sole plate and wheel on a bench grinder. 
- Demonstrate pre-use checks for such equipment. 
- State the limitation of cut in any material when using a grinding disc and why limitation applies. 
- List the potential risks that the use of grinding wheel equipment presents. 
- Use the equipment in a safe and efficient manner. 
- Dress a grinding wheel using the correct tool.

Course Requirements 
- Bench grinder and wheels (including broken wheel) 
- Pavement saw (Stihl or similar) with carborundum and diamond tipped steel blades. 
- Arbor retaining nut spanners. 
- Gloves, impact rated goggles, ear defenders, and disposable dust masks. 
- Classroom with flip chart. 
- Suitable venue to enable the cutting of asphalt or concrete. 
- Hand held angle grinder. 
- Overalls and safety footwear 
- Wheel Dresser
