Course Overview
The NRSWA CAT & Genny/Cable Avoidance course is designed to give operatives and supervisors the skills and knowledge to be able to safely conduct cable avoidance mapping to find out what is beneath the ground before they start digging. The course will cover the following:- Safe use of CAT and Genny
Cables and buried services underneath the ground represent a huge hazard to all civil engineering and construction operatives. Cable or pipe damage can result in expensive repairs, delays to work and personal injuries. The cable avoidance tool known as the CAT is used to locate buried services and being able to use a cable locator is essential to the safe running of your project.

- Safety in location and avoidance of underground apparatus
- Depths of underground apparatus
- Different types of safety warning markers used by utilities
- Location CAT and Genny pattern techniques
- Interpretation of plans showing location of underground apparatus and cables
- Identifying risk of underground apparatus
- Pre-use CAT and Genny locator checks
- Correct Usage of generator (Genny)
- Interpreting signals from the Cat and Genny
- Tracing Techniques for locating electric, water and telecommunications cables
- Establishing line and mark apparatus
